Grant to purchase musical instruments, costumes for traditional Shigmo celebrations
rt and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar distributes sanction letters to traditional Shigmotsav troupes from Canacona, Quepem, Sanguem talukas.
Sanction orders for grant of Rs 2 lakh each to 85 traditional Shigmostav Mell/troupes from Sanguem, Quepem and Canacona taluka were distributed under the Art and Culture department’s ‘Mand Sanskriti Yojana’ in Canacona on Tuesday.
Distributing the sanction letters to the 85 traditional Shigmotsav troupes, Art and Culture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said various schemes will be created to preserve these traditional festivals, rituals and fairs in the State.
Stating that a scheme has been prepared to support the Dhillo festival, Tawadkar announced three prizes for the best of the reels made by the traditional Shigmo troupe. The awards will be given in this year’s government organised Shigmotsav celebrations.
In his address, Tawadkar said a cultured individual, society and village offers the true identity of the State.
“This identity needs to be maintained through traditional art and folklore/festivals. Even today, Goans feels Feni is the nectar of Goa, but we need to change this image. We need to change the beach, casino, and drug culture. Only 30 percent of the people are involved in this culture, but efforts are being made to create this unnecessary stigma on 70 percent of the people.”
Tawadkar also announced financial assistance for sports events to three active clubs in Canacona.
As part of the ‘Mand Sanskriti Yojana’, each shigmo (Mell) gets financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to purchase musical instruments like Dhol, Tanse, Ghumat and traditional Costumes (Dresses/Attires) for the traditional Shigmo festivals in the State.
BJP South Goa President Prabhakar Gaonkar, CMC Chairperson Laxman Pagi and ZP (Poinguinim) Ajay Lolayekar, BJP Canacona Mandal President Prabhakar Gaonkar, Dy Collector Pratap Naik Gaonkar, Sarpanch (Agonda) Nilesh Pagi, Khotigao Sarpanch Jayesh Gaonkar, Poinguinim Sarpanch Savita Tawadkar, Shristhal Sarpanch Sejal Gaonkar, and CMC Councilor Ramakant Naik Gaonkar were present on the occasion.
